Fate of the Spectre
Designing user-focused experiences for play
Fate of the Spectre is a DC themed deck building card game pitting magical heroes and villains against the Tower of Fate.
The idea stemmed from my love of trading cards as a child. I miss collecting and trading Marvel and DC Comics cards, and set out to create a set of my own. The game mechanics are introduced to give the set longevity, interactivity, and a purpose.
The mobile version employs passive communication between mobile devices in proximity to one another to do battle as people go about their day. The leaderboard tracks your daily progress and nets you rewards at the end of the day.
Don’t forget to iterate
Earlier versions of the cards featured custom character logos rather than game mechanics. I left this idea on the cutting room floor, mostly because the logos were competing with the art, and I would much rather highlight the work of the talented DC Comics artists. The logos and renders below were first drafts for several DC characters.
